How to find unreconciled transactions in Xero

Xero already has several places that list what is not yet reconciled. Start there. They are built for exactly this.

1. The Reconcile screen

Go to Accounting > Bank accounts and open the account. The Reconcile tab lists the bank statement lines that still need to be matched or coded. Anything still in that list is unreconciled.

2. The Status column on bank statements

On the account's Bank statements screen, each statement line has a Status: Unreconciled, Reconciled or Deleted. Filter by that status and by date to see the lines that are still open.

3. Export the unreconciled statement lines

Xero administrators can export a list of statement lines that have not been reconciled, as PDF or CSV, filtered by bank account and date. Use this when you need the list outside Xero, for example to send to a client.

4. The Bank Reconciliation reports

Run Bank Reconciliation Summary for a date. When transactions and reconciliation are up to date on that date, the balance in Xero, the statement balance and the balance in your online banking should be the same. Xero also points to this report for finding duplicate statement lines. Bank Reconciliation Detail lets you enter your real opening and closing statement balances to compare them with Xero's.

5. Duplicate transactions in the ledger

Run the Account Transactions report for the bank account over the period. Two entries with the same date, amount and payee are the usual sign of a double entry.

6. A line was matched wrongly

Xero lets you undo the reconciliation of a line or use Remove and Redo, depending on the situation. The Xero Central article below explains which one to use.

Xero's screens compare the bank feed or imported statement lines with Xero's own records. If your difference is between a bank CSV and a different file, for example an export you want to check line by line, you need a comparison of the two files themselves.

When the screens are not enough

Upload your bank statement CSV and your Xero Account Transactions CSV. Recondiff lists what matches, what is only in the bank, what is only in Xero and possible duplicates. The files stay in your browser.
