Convert PDF bank statement to CSV for Xero or QuickBooks

Choose a PDF statement. This page reads it, checks every line against the balances printed on it, and gives you a CSV in the layout Xero or QuickBooks Online asks for. The PDF stays in your browser.

Try your bank first. In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Xero's help says PDF statements can't be imported. It recommends an OFX file from online banking, which needs no converting. If you only have the PDF, here is how to do it by hand, or use the tool below.

Choose your PDF statement

Drop a text-based PDF here, as downloaded from online banking, or choose it. Scans are not supported.

Why trust the numbers

  • Checked line by lineOpening balance plus each line must equal the balance printed on the statement, to the cent. A line that doesn't add up turns red. We never change a figure for you.
  • The PDF stays in your browserThis page opens the file itself. It is not uploaded, stored or logged. You can watch your browser's Network tab while it runs.
  • Fix a line before you downloadEvery date, description and amount can be edited in the table, and the check runs again after each edit.

Free to check, pay when you need every line

Founding offer: 40% off your first payment until 30 November 2026. The code FOUNDING40 is applied for you at checkout.

Already have a licence key?
Lost your key after paying?

Enter the payment reference shown after you paid (starts with txn_) or the invoice number on your Paddle receipt, and the e-mail address you paid with. You get a new key for the same paid period: nothing is extended, and the old key stops working. Up to 3 new keys per payment. We do not send e-mail: the key appears here, once.

What it has been tested on

Every test below has to come out right to the cent: each date, each amount, opening and closing balance. We have not tested the statements of every bank, and we don't claim to. If yours doesn't add up, the page shows you where.

PDFs we made up to copy common layouts:

  • Date printed once per day, amount on the last line of a long description, balance at the end of the day, brought and carried forward lines
  • No year on the dates, a statement that crosses into a new year, overdrawn balances marked OD
  • Debit and Credit columns, dollar signs, CR and DR on balances, opening and closing rows
  • Extra Code and Reference columns, two-line column headings, centred figures, balances in a summary box
  • Month-first dates, one Amount column, parentheses for money out
  • Two date columns and numbers written 1.234,56
  • Typewriter-style statements where each row is one run of text, minus signs after the number
  • One Amount column with DR and CR and no running balance (only the total can be checked, and the page says so)
  • Online banking history printed newest first, no opening balance
  • Day and month order that only the statement period can settle
  • Two accounts in one PDF
  • Column headings on the first page only, and no column headings at all
  • An Amount column with no plus or minus, read from how the balance moves
  • A PDF that stores each character as its own piece of text, on a page stored rotated

Sample statements published by two US credit unions in their "how to read your statement" guides: both add up to the cent.

What it won't do: scanned PDFs, photos and password-locked files are refused, not guessed at. There is no OCR. Statements in other languages may not be recognised. Credit card statements were not part of the tests.

PDFs are read by PDF.js (Apache License 2.0), served from this site.

Questions

Does my statement leave my computer?

No. The PDF is opened and read inside this web page. It is not uploaded, stored or logged. The page makes these kinds of requests: its own files, anonymous counts (page opened, a PDF was read, whether the balances added up, a download, the payment window; no file data), and, only if you buy or enter a key, the licence check and Paddle's payment window. Paddle's payment script loads with the page so that the window can open; it is given nothing about your file. One first-party cookie remembers which website or campaign you came from; the privacy page says what it holds.

What about a scanned PDF?

It is not supported. A scan is a picture with no text in it. The page tells you so and stops. It doesn't guess numbers from a picture, and a scan with a hidden OCR layer is refused too.

What happens if a line doesn't add up?

It stays exactly as printed and turns red, with the size of the difference next to it. You can correct it from your PDF, or download anyway. You decide, and the button says what you are about to do.

Will Xero or QuickBooks accept the file?

The columns, signs and date formats follow Xero's help page and Intuit's help page. Both show you the lines before anything is imported, so look through them there. QuickBooks Online can also read a PDF by itself: see converting a PDF statement for QuickBooks.

Does one licence cover both tools?

Yes. A 30-day pass or monthly plan unlocks this converter and the bank vs ledger compare tool, with the same key.

Is it accounting advice?

No. It turns a PDF into a file. Check the lines before you import them into your books.
