What it does

Timeline Peek is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers. On video players that show no preview of their own, pointing at the timeline shows a thumbnail of that moment above it. It also saves the current frame, or the frame being previewed, as a full-resolution PNG or JPEG file. Everything runs inside the browser.

Capabilities

Previews on players that have none

Pointing at the timeline of the browser's own video controls, or of a custom player, shows a thumbnail of that moment above the timeline, with its time. On a player with no timeline to point at, holding Shift and moving across the video does the same.

Thumbnails from the video itself

A hidden, muted copy of the video is moved to the moment under the pointer. For HLS streams the copy uses the stream's smallest sharp-enough version. For other streams, thumbnails are kept for the parts that have already played.

Full-resolution frame capture

A camera button on the video, or Alt+Shift+S, saves the current frame. While a preview is showing, the same shortcut saves the previewed frame instead. Files are named after the page and the moment they show.

Out of the way where it is not needed

On sites that draw their own thumbnails, such as YouTube and Vimeo, previews are off by default, and they turn off on any player that shows its own. Each site can be switched on or off from the toolbar button.

Nothing leaves the browser

The extension has no server and no analytics, and loads no remote code. The only network requests it causes are for the video the page is already playing.

Questions

Where does Timeline Peek run?

Entirely in your browser. Atesen Software operates no server for Timeline Peek, receives nothing from it and cannot see what you watch or capture.

What does Timeline Peek connect to?

Only the addresses of the video a page is already playing. To make thumbnails, the extension opens a hidden copy of the same video file or stream, from the page itself, exactly as the page's own player does. It contains no analytics and loads no code from anywhere; the one third-party library it bundles, hls.js, is shipped inside the extension.

What we do not claim

  • It is in development. It has not been submitted to or approved by the Chrome Web Store, and has no installation count or review history.
  • It does not work on DRM-protected video, such as most paid streaming services: no browser extension can read those frames.
  • Live streams have no fixed timeline, so they get no previews.
  • Finding a custom player's timeline is a best effort. Some players will not be recognised; Shift and move still works on those.
  • Browsers other than Chromium-based ones, such as Firefox and Safari, are not supported today.
