Timeline Peek privacy

This section describes how Timeline Peek handles data. It supplements the site-wide privacy policy.

Where the extension runs

Entirely in your browser. Atesen Software operates no server for Timeline Peek, receives nothing from it and cannot see what you watch or capture.

What it talks to

Only the addresses of the video a page is already playing. To make thumbnails, the extension opens a hidden copy of the same video file or stream, from the page itself, exactly as the page's own player does. It contains no analytics and loads no code from anywhere; the one third-party library it bundles, hls.js, is shipped inside the extension.

What it stores

  • Your settings, in the browser's extension storage. If browser sync is on, the browser syncs them to your other devices.
  • Thumbnails, in memory only, for as long as the page is open.
  • Captured frames, only when you ask for one, saved as files in your download folder. Nothing else is kept.

Screenshots and the clipboard

When a site does not let the extension read a video's pixels directly, a capture takes a screenshot of the visible tab, cuts out the video's area and saves that. The screenshot is processed inside the browser and not kept. The clipboard is written only if you turn on Also copy to the clipboard, and only with the frame you captured.

Permissions it asks for

  • Access to all sites: to find videos and their timelines on the pages you visit, and to cut a capture out of a screenshot of the tab when needed.
  • Downloads: to save captured frames.
  • Scripting: to load the bundled HLS library into a page only when an HLS stream needs it, and to find which frame of a page holds the video to capture.
  • Offscreen document and storage: to turn a capture into a file, and to remember your settings.
