What it does
Cost Shield is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers, for the BigQuery pages of the Google Cloud console. The console estimates how many bytes a query will process, but shows no price and runs anything on a click. Cost Shield turns the estimate into dollars at the on-demand price of the project's location, asks before a query over the user's limit runs, and keeps a local log of estimated spend. Organisations can set the limits through Chrome policy.
Capabilities
Cost badge
A price such as “≈ $20.00” next to the console's own estimate, at the on-demand price of the project's location. 48 locations are known, from $6.25 per TiB in the US and EU multi-regions.
Run guard
Asks before a query over the user's limit runs (default $1), whether it is started with the Run button or a keyboard shortcut. Run anyway only becomes active after a moment.
Daily budget
Asks when a run would take the day's estimated spend over a budget.
SQL notes
Flags SELECT * (but not SELECT * EXCEPT or COUNT(*)), a LIMIT on a large scan, which saves nothing, and a large scan with no WHERE.
Spend log
The estimate of every run from this browser: today, this month and the share of the free 1 TiB, exportable as CSV. Projects on capacity (editions) pricing are marked and never stopped.
Team rules
An administrator can set limits through Chrome policy. Users cannot change them, and a block limit cannot be overridden.

Questions
Where does Cost Shield run?
In your browser, on the Google Cloud console only (console.cloud.google.com). Atesen Software receives nothing from it.
What does Cost Shield connect to?
Nothing from your queries or projects. It makes no network requests, has no analytics and loads no remote code. Its price table is built into the extension, as listed on Google Cloud's pricing page on 29 September 2026, and it fetches no prices.
How do I get help with Cost Shield?
Support for Cost Shield is provided by email in English and Turkish.
Email support@atesensoftware.com. We aim to acknowledge every support email within two business days (Europe/Istanbul).
What we do not claim
- It is in development. It has not been submitted to or approved by the Chrome Web Store, and has no installation count or review history.
- It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google. BigQuery and Google Cloud are trademarks of Google LLC.
- Its figures are estimates from Google Cloud's published on-demand list prices. Cached results are free, billing has minimums, and discounts or contracts are unknown to it. The invoice is what Google bills.
- It sees only queries run from the BigQuery pages of the console in this browser, not queries from the API, the bq tool, scheduled queries or other people.
- Prices change. The prices in the extension are the ones Google published on 29 September 2026.
