Cost Shield documentation
Documentation for Cost Shield. It describes the extension as it exists today, before any store listing, and will be extended as it changes.
Requirements
- Chrome 116 or newer, or another Chromium-based browser of the same version such as Edge, Brave or Opera.
- Until the extension is listed, it is installed from its folder: open the browser's extensions page, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and select the folder that contains manifest.json.
- A Google Cloud project with BigQuery. The free BigQuery sandbox works.
Seeing the price
- Open BigQuery in the Google Cloud console and type a query. The badge appears after the console's estimate, “This query will process …”.
- If the project is not in the US multi-region, set its location in the toolbar popup. Each project remembers its own.
- A query above the limit asks before it runs. Don't run cancels; Run anyway becomes active after a moment.
Settings
In the toolbar popup: the project's location, capacity pricing, the limit above which to ask, the daily budget and the default location. The spend log is shown there and can be exported as CSV or cleared.
Team rules (Chrome policy)
In the Google Admin console, open Apps & extensions, choose the extension and paste a policy under Policy for extensions. The settings are confirmAboveUsd, blockAboveUsd, dailyBudgetUsd, defaultLocation and projects, which gives a location or capacity pricing per project. Settings set by policy appear locked in the popup.
