Local Mail Export documentation
Documentation for Local Mail Export. It describes the extension as it exists today, before any store listing, and will be extended as it changes.
Requirements
- Chrome 116 or newer, or another Chromium-based browser of the same version such as Edge, Brave or Opera.
- For developers who already have the source folder, an unpacked build can be loaded for testing: open the browser's extensions page, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and select the folder that contains manifest.json.
- Gmail in the browser, at mail.google.com.
Exporting
- Open a conversation and press Export this conversation at the bottom of the page, or tick conversations in the list and press Export N conversations. The toolbar popup and Alt+Shift+E do the same.
- A new tab gathers the messages. Keep the Gmail tab open until it says Ready.
- Press Print or save as PDF and choose Save as PDF, or Download ZIP, or Index (CSV).
Missing messages
If Gmail did not list every message of a ticked conversation, the archive says so on that conversation and at the top. Opening the conversation and exporting it from there gets all of its messages.
Settings
In the toolbar popup: original .eml files in the ZIP, attachments as files, loading pictures from the internet (off by default), the CSV separator, and whether to show the Export button in Gmail.
