Local Mail Export privacy

This section describes how Local Mail Export handles data, last updated 23 October 2026. It supplements the site-wide privacy policy.

Where the extension runs

Entirely in your browser, on Gmail (mail.google.com). Atesen Software receives nothing from it.

What it reads

Only the conversations you export, when you export them. The extension reads the ids and subjects of those conversations from the Gmail page. For each message, the Gmail tab asks Gmail for the original, the same file Gmail's Download message menu item gives, from the account you are signed in to.

What it stores

  • Your settings, in the browser's sync storage. If browser sync is on, the browser syncs them to your other devices.
  • For each export, the list of its messages (ids and subjects) for the archive tab, in the browser's session storage. The browser clears it when it closes, and lists older than a day are removed when the next export starts.
  • The archive, the ZIP and the CSV only as files you choose to download. Nothing else is kept.

What it sends

Nothing from your mail goes to Atesen Software. The extension asks for no Google account permission, has no analytics and loads no remote code. Its requests go to Gmail, for your own messages from the account you are signed in to. Pictures from the internet are loaded only if you switch on remote pictures in the archive, which is off by default; then the archive tab loads them directly from the servers named in those messages.

A future paid version may add a licence check; this page will be updated before it ships.

Permissions it asks for

  • Storage: to remember your settings.
  • Access to mail.google.com: to add the Export button, read the conversations you export and fetch their messages.
