Figma bulk create: how to name exported files from your spreadsheet columns

Bulk create in Figma Buzz turns a spreadsheet into one asset per row. Whoever receives the files wants names built from the same sheet: the campaign, the language, the SKU, the size. This guide is about designing that file name and getting it onto every asset before you export.

The short answer

Figma's bulk create fills text and images from your sheet; its help article does not describe naming the new assets from the columns. Figma documents that a layer's name becomes the exported file name, with a slash making a folder, so the work is to give each asset the right name before you export. Figma's own rename tool works from names that already exist, not from a spreadsheet.

What Figma documents

  • Bulk create. It belongs to Figma Buzz. You start from one asset and upload a CSV or XLSX file whose first row is the header; each following row becomes one asset. You click Bulk create in the left navigation bar, then Upload spreadsheet, link each text or image to a data field and click Create assets. Each object can be linked to one data field (Bulk create assets in Figma Buzz).
  • Export from Buzz. Select the assets, or none to include every asset in the file, click Export, pick PNG, JPG or PDF and a size, and click Export assets. In the browser, files go to your download location; the desktop app asks you to name the file and choose where it goes. Buzz files also have a design mode with the same export settings as Figma Design (Export assets from Figma Buzz).
  • Folders from slashes. Figma's article on exporting from Figma Design says a layer named button/pill/default is exported into folders button and pill as a file named default (Export static designs from Figma).
  • Rename layers. Select layers and press Ctrl+R (Command+R on a Mac). The Rename to field takes Current name, Number ↑ and Number ↓, and Match accepts regular expressions (Rename layers). It reads nothing from a sheet.

Step 1: choose the columns

  • Start from what the receiving system needs, not from what is on the design. A language code can belong in the name without appearing on the asset.
  • Include one column that is unique per row, such as a SKU or an id, so no two assets get the same name.

Step 2: write the pattern

  • Go from broad to narrow: campaign/language/sku_size. Each slash becomes a folder level.
  • Pick one separator inside a level, such as an underscore, and stick to it.
  • Turn free text into safe text: lower case, no spaces, no characters that Windows does not allow in file names, such as : * ? " < > |.
  • Agree three example names with whoever receives the files before you rename 200 assets.

Step 3: put the names on the assets

With Figma's own tools this means copying values from the sheet into each name. Rename layers handles a prefix, a running number or a regular expression, which is enough for banner_01 to banner_40 but not for names built from column values. By hand, one skipped row shifts every name after it, so compare the last names with the last rows.

Step 4: export and check

Export as above and compare the number of files with the number of rows. Figma's export articles do not describe a manifest that maps files back to rows, so keep a list of your own if the receiver needs one.

Option: Sheet Namer, a plugin for Figma Buzz

Sheet Namer reads the text on each asset, matches it to its row in your CSV or pasted sheet, and names every asset from a pattern such as {product|slug}_{lang}_{#type}, using any column, including ones that never appear on the design.

Status. Sheet Namer is built and tested and is being published on Figma Community as a free plugin, so it cannot be installed from Figma Community today. Pro license keys go on sale on its own site the day the plugin is listed, with checkout by Paddle. It has no installations or reviews yet.

  • Matched by content, not position. A reordered grid cannot give a file the wrong name, and ambiguous or unmatched assets are flagged before anything changes.
  • Steps 2 to 4 in one place. Transforms such as slug, upper, lower and pad, a slash for each folder level, optional ASCII-only and Windows-safe names, and automatic numbering for duplicates.
  • Preview, then one undo step. Every new name is listed before you rename, and the plugin can revert its last rename later.
  • One ZIP with a manifest. PNG, JPG or PDF at 1x to 3x, with a manifest CSV of asset ids, old names and file paths.
  • Stays in Figma. The plugin has no network access; a Pro key is checked offline inside it.

Limits. It works only in Figma Buzz files, not in Figma Design, FigJam or Slides, and never changes text, images or layout on an asset.

Price. The free plugin previews every name and renames or exports 10 different assets per 24 hours, with every feature. Pro is $24 once, with no subscription, for one person on the computers they use.

Which route fits

  • A running number or a prefix: Rename layers.
  • Names built from columns, with folders and a list of what was exported: a plugin such as Sheet Namer once it is published, or a script of your own.
