How to export a Miro mind map to XMind, OPML or Markdown
You built a mind map on a Miro board and now need it somewhere else: in XMind, in an outliner, or as a nested list in your notes, as topics you can edit rather than a picture. This guide covers what Miro offers for getting a mind map out, where that stops, and an app that writes the tree to formats XMind and outliners read.
The short answer
Miro's Mind map article says you can export a mind map as an image or a PDF file, and for data its FAQ points to a Marketplace app for CSV. XMind's import reads FreeMind, Markdown and OPML, among other formats. So the job is to get the tree, with its levels, into one of those.
Option 1: an image or a PDF from Miro
Following the same article:
- Click the Export this board icon. You do not need to select anything.
- Choose Save as image, use the drag handles to select your mind map, choose the size and click Export. PDF can be selected there too.
- For Save as PDF, Miro asks you to create a frame around the mind map first if it does not have one.
The result is good for a slide or a report. It is a picture, though: XMind or an outliner cannot turn it back into topics.
Option 2: copy the text
Miro's Copy as text or as an image article lists the objects whose text you can copy with Ctrl+C or Cmd+C: sticky notes, shapes, texts, lines, frame titles, tables and cards. Mind map nodes are not on that list, and several objects paste as text separated by line breaks, which is a flat list without the levels of your map.
Option 3: the CSV app Miro names
The FAQ in Miro's Mind map article answers the question of exporting mind map data to CSV by pointing to a Marketplace app called Mindmap downloader, made by another developer. If a spreadsheet of the tree is what you need, check its listing for the details.
Where these stop
- An image or a PDF cannot be imported as topics anywhere.
- Copied text loses the structure, so you rebuild the levels by hand.
- XMind's Import page names FreeMind, Markdown and OPML among the formats it imports, through File > Import. What is missing is something that writes your Miro map in one of them.
Option 4: Mind Map I/O for Miro
Mind Map I/O for Miro is an app made by Atesen Software that runs inside a Miro board. It imports outline and mind map files as native Miro mind maps, and exports them the other way.
- Six formats out. Select any node of a mind map, or shapes and sticky notes joined by connectors, and download or copy the tree as OPML, Markdown, plain text, CSV, FreeMind or JSON.
- The levels come along. The export keeps the tree: each node sits under its parent in the file.
- No .xmind file. It does not write XMind's own format. Export FreeMind, OPML or Markdown and use XMind's File > Import.
- Stays in your browser. The app reads the board in its page inside Miro. No file, outline or board content reaches Atesen Software's servers.
How to use it
- Open the install link on the Mind Map I/O site and choose the Miro team to add the app to.
- On a board in that team, select a node of your mind map and open Mind Map I/O from the apps toolbar.
- Read the selection, choose OPML, Markdown or FreeMind, and download or copy the file.
- In XMind, click File > Import and choose the same format.
To bring a map from XMind or an outliner back onto a board, see How to import XMind, OPML or FreeMind mind maps into Miro.
Good to know. Miro marks its mind map interface for apps as experimental. Nodes hold text only, so what the app reads from a map is its text and its tree. If Miro changes that interface, mind map features may pause until the app is updated; shapes and connectors go through Miro's stable interface. The app is not listed on the Miro Marketplace and has not been reviewed by Miro.
Price. The free plan imports and exports OPML and Markdown for maps up to 50 nodes, and XMind imports both. FreeMind, CSV, plain text and JSON need Pro, which covers every format and maps up to 3,000 nodes for one person: $6 a month or $48 a year. Pro is not on sale yet; join the waitlist on the Mind Map I/O site.

Which route fits
- A picture for a slide or a document: Miro's own image or PDF export.
- A spreadsheet of the tree: the CSV app Miro's FAQ names, or CSV from Mind Map I/O Pro.
- The map in XMind, an outliner or your notes as topics you can edit: OPML, Markdown or FreeMind from an app such as Mind Map I/O for Miro, then XMind's import.
