QuickBooks Online Classic View reports are gone: how to work with Modern View

The reports you opened every day in QuickBooks Online look different now, and the Classic View is no longer there to switch back to. This guide covers what Intuit says about the change, the Modern View settings that make a report easier to read, what they do not cover, and a Chrome extension that changes how the report sits on screen.

The short answer

Intuit's article Transition from Classic to Modern View reports says Classic View reports have moved to Modern View, and that your data and saved reports came with you. It does not describe a way back. What you can change is how Modern View shows a report.

What Modern View gives you

Intuit's Customize your reports with a modern view and the transition article describe these:

  • View options. A view style that changes text size, spacing and font. The same dropdown can expand or collapse all of the report's data.
  • Rows, columns and gridlines. Under General options you can choose a banded row colour, a colour for selected columns, and vertical and horizontal borders.
  • Page-level scroll and search. The whole page scrolls instead of a small box, and Ctrl+F (Command+F on a Mac) searches within a long report.
  • Settings that stay. When you drill down into a transaction report and go back, your customizations stay in place.
  • Export. When you export a customized report to Excel, calculated rows and columns keep their formulas.

The transition article notes that some visual options are only available in higher plans, such as QuickBooks Online Advanced and Intuit Enterprise Suite.

Printing and files

Run reports in QuickBooks Online lists Export to Excel and Export as CSV under the Export/Print dropdown. Print/Save as PDF there offers Portrait or Landscape, a Smart page break checkbox to keep related items together and a Repeat header checkbox for headers on every page.

Where these stop

  • None of the Intuit articles we checked describes a way back to Classic View.
  • They describe text size, spacing and colours, but no setting for how wide the report sits in the window.
  • They do not describe keeping the column headings or account names in view while you scroll a long or wide report.
  • Some of the visual options depend on your plan.

Option: Report Fixer

Report Fixer is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers. It changes how QuickBooks Online reports are shown: the report uses the full width of the window, headings and the first column stay in view, and long names wrap instead of being cut off.

  • Full width and sticky headings. The report uses the width of the window instead of a narrow centred column. Column headings stay in view while the report scrolls, and account names stay in view when a wide report scrolls sideways.
  • Full text and row height. Names and memos cut off with an ellipsis wrap onto a second line. Rows can be Normal, Compact or Tight.
  • Focus mode. Alt+Shift+F makes the report fill the window with a slim title bar, and Esc returns.
  • Pro. Copy the whole report for Excel or Google Sheets with Alt+Shift+C, save a CSV, download an Excel workbook with rows grouped by the report's sections, reopen each report with the rows you collapsed or expanded, and open drill-downs in a new tab.

Good to know. It changes no data in QuickBooks Online. Reports are read in your browser and never sent to Atesen Software; only a license key you enter is checked with the license server. It works with QuickBooks Online in the browser, not with the QuickBooks desktop products. It finds the report from the page as it is drawn, so a change to QuickBooks Online can break a feature until the extension is updated. It needs Chrome 137 or newer, or a Chromium-based browser of the same version.

Price. Report Fixer is listed in the Chrome Web Store. The free plan applies every layout fix to 3 different reports a day, with no account and no key. Pro is $9 a month or $79 a year per person and fixes every report with no daily limit. Everyone who installed it before version 0.3 keeps every feature it had then, free. Pro is on sale on the Report Fixer site, with checkout by Paddle.

Which route fits

  • A denser or calmer report: the view style, banded rows and gridlines in Modern View.
  • A file to work in: Export to Excel, where a customized report keeps the formulas of its calculated rows and columns, or Export as CSV.
  • A printout: Print/Save as PDF in landscape, with Repeat header on.
  • Reading wide reports on screen all day, with headings in view: an extension such as Report Fixer.

For reports that sit in a narrow column with names cut off, see QuickBooks Online report too narrow: how to make it readable and export it to Excel.
